Which langauge(s) should I learn if I wanna to work in the United Nations?
I am from Hong Kong. So far I can Speak English,Mandarin Chinese Cantonese,Italian and German.
French, Spanish,Russian are all official langauges in the United Nations. However, which langauge has a more dominant effect in this organization? Why?
Which extra langauge should I add to my list? Why?
For international work, FRENCH. As far as pure numbers of people are concerned, especially in the number of countries represented by the U.N. and it’s most commonly used. Also, the ability to translate French is very useful as it is an intra-national language for much technology, many instructions, and a great deal of original literature.
I decided to marry and raise a family first, but because of my degree in French and some connections my father had, the U.N. was a very viable option for me early in my career. French will also give you an edge in the field of journalism and business.
In the United States, Spanish is usually the most useful second language because of the high percentage of immigrants that come in from bordering Mexico.
Japanese, these days, is also an excellent option for personal business (or translating for businesses), as are the Chinese dialects in which you are already skilled.
