foreign country for 3 monthes no english?…?
I am graduating this year and I am planning on traveling to russia for 3 onthes where I want to get as good at the language as possible. how do you think that I could go about doing this? I want to try to go the whole time without speaking in english at all. I was consittering a homestay of some sort in a rural town that wouldn’t have as much english as in larger centres such as moscow or st.petersberg. I have been learning russian since I was 7 in school, so for 10 years and
I have a pretty good understanding of it so I wouldn’t be completely lost. I also would plan on just getting out and talking to people around the town as much as possible. maybe even get a job with other people. I’s carry a voice recorder and a notebook with me and if possible somehow take russian courses too, during which I may speak russian. Do you think that this could work? do you think that I’ll become fluent? if not, how close?
I think you had better start working on your English! Especially if you want to be viewed as educated.
I would suggest getting out of the big cities. Doesn’t matter where you go, there are fewer speakers of the non-mother tongue, when you get out of the big cities. And make the effort to never Speak English, even when you are given the opportunity.
With one exception…when people want to practice their ENGLISH with you, YOU become the teacher, and you also learn more that way. Exchange is a good thing! Plus, you get to help them out.
Also, you’ll probably feel completely lost for a month or two, anyway! (just the nature of things)
And, you won’t become fluent for at least 8 months or so…two semesters of immersion is generally considered the minimum for becoming fluent.
