I teach third grade and just got a student from Africa who speaks no English.?
I need some good ESL websites that maybe practice sight words, read stories with kids, or games to help learn the language. There are a lot of sights for Spanish speaking kids, which is not what I need. He knows the letters of the alphabet now and we are working on letter sounds. Any help?
It will take him 1yr 1/2 to 2 years to become fluent in English. Since he is not spanish, I would assume the community surrounding him might not be a whole community, speaking another language. Have you talked to the parents ? If they Speak English, it would be good to suggest they start to speak only English at home too. That would reduce the delay to about 6-8 months. The secret of any language is to be surrounded by it. It might be forcing, but it work.
