How to Teach English in Brazil?
Hey I’m currently a senior in high school (I’m an American) and I want to learn how to become an English teacher that will work overseas in Brazil teaching English to non-English speakers. So what courses should I take in college? I was thinking about taking teaching courses as well as Portuguese courses in college, but I need more advice. Does anyone have a good plan of action for me? Thanks a lot
In general you’ll need a degree (although there are still possibilities if you do not have this) and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate to get a visa and work.
The degree can be in pretty well any subject as it’s usually needed to show you’ve received some decent education. It’s better to have a language related degree if you can though, English being the obvious one!
The TEFL certificate can be taken either in-house or online at your own pace which is a much cheaper option (see http://icalweb.com).
You don’t need to know the local language to teach English, but it never hurts (especially outside the classroom) so a few Portuguese lessons wouldn’t be a bad idea. And then after that it’s just a matter of finding work – which isn’t too difficult in Brazil if you’ve the right qualifications.
