Can you recommend me a good/the best Arabic-English dictionary, please?
I’ve recently decided to learn Arabic. Does it matter which dialect you learn? How well can the different Arabic dialect speakers understand each other? And do you know what Arabic dialect they speak in Malaysia?

I studied Arabic at university over 30 years ago. I now work as a translator and my husband is a lecturer, often going out to the Middle East. We both have a copy of it, in fact we just had to buy a new one because it was worn out! It is really well laid out and easy to find words.
We learned the Lebanese dialect at university, then we lived in Oman, we’ve travelled round the Middle East and my husband is always going out there. As long as you have a sound understanding of Standard Arabic, you will manage ok anywhere. There are changes from area to area, especially in pronunciation, but don’t worry about that. Just get the basic Standard Arabic of the Qur’an first.
I’m puzzled as to what dialect they speak in Malaysia though. As far as I know, they speak Malay there along with a number of other languages from further east. However, over half the population are Muslims, so perhaps Qur’anic Arabic is understood.
